In Italy, the Grandfather cup is a very popular coffee gelato. When I was living in Italy it was my favorite choice of ice cream and still today everytime I am in Italy I always stop by a bar or supermarket to pick one cup for myself. The picture below is the original Coppa del nonno, nothing fancy just yummy coffee ice cream in a brown cup. YUM!

And after decades it is still a very popular choice because it is the most sincere gelato there is: nothing complicated nor decorations, just coffee ice cream in that brown cup that has become a symbol.

One day I decided to make it at home, to the delight my family and friends and coffee lovers of homemade ice cream.

I decided to make the the Grandfather Cup without eggs, and even without ice cream, so that really anyone can decide to try it. For a gluten free version, you can replace the flour with cornstarch or potato starch. It can be preprared in very little time and If you leave it in the freezer for more than two hours, let stand a few minutes at room temperature, before serving.

Preparation: 30 minutes

serves: 6

Ingredients:

3.5 ounces of sweetened espresso which equals to one espresso cup of coffee

1 cup of milk

2 tablespoons of instant coffee powder ( instant espresso or American coffee )

4 tablespoons of sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons of flour

3/4 cup of cream

In a saucepan mix sugar, flour and instant coffee grinds .

Slowly add the milk and sweetened coffee and give it a quick mix.

Bring it to a boil and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, for about 5-10 minutes, until the custard has thickened slightly. Remove from stove.

Transfer to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap and let cool completly .

Whip the cream ad gently fold into the custard, make sure to to do this in two stages, with the aid of a spatula and a movement from the bottom to top . Pour in six small cups even better if you have espresso cups or like me I used a simple ice cream and pudding cup/bowl. Cover each cup with plastic wrap place all cups on a tray and put in the freezer a few hours before serving your grandfather cup.

Tip: To decorate: top with either espresso bean/s or chocolate covered espresso beans or chocolate chips or even mint leaves.

Enjoy!
